Day Geckos are found on the Mascarene Islands. This group of islands off the east coast of Africa includes Madagascar, the Comoro Islands, Aldabra Island, the Seychelles Islands, Reunion Island, Round Island, and Mauritus. At least one species occurs in South Africa.
The large majority of day geckos (22 species) are found on Madagascar. Day geckos probably evolved on the African mainland and spread to the Mascarenes. Because of the unique fauna and flora of Madagascar, they have evolved in so many numerous ways. They have proliferated to such a degree on Madagascar, that they are essentially endemics. |
