Before Attempting

to breed

If you are interested in breeding bearded dragons, you will need to consider a few things.

The bearded dragons must be healthy. They should have good weight and no signs of Illness.

You must maintain your dragons on a high quality diet.

Females breed best during their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years, and breed less efficiently thereafter.

You may keep one male with 2 females. Have an extra male and switch males to assure high fertility. The presence of more males will cause fighting, but stimulate males to breed more. You may want to set up a breeding pair/trio in an enclosure within sight of another pair/trio. The males will bob at each other and attempt to attack each other through the glass, while being a safe distance away from each other.

Conditioning

For 2 months set all light timers to 10 hours of daylight. Reduce the temperature closest to the basking spot, to 75-80F. Allow the night time temperature to fall down to 64F. Then begin to bring the photoperiod and temperature back to normal.

Breeding

Three to four weeks after returning to normal conditions, behavior related to breeding will be obvious. The throats of the males will darken. Males will head bob, attempt to copulate, and fight. Fighting consists of striking out, hissing with mouths open, and their bodies raised high above the ground lashing their tails at each other. Females will do submissive displays of arm waving. Offer food daily. Females should be maintained on an optimal feeding schedule through out the breeding season.
