It is best to pick out a recently weaned animal. They will bond with you much more easily. Do not choose one that is so young that it is not eating easily on its own. The eyes should have been opened for about a month to six weeks. The tail should be fluffy. If the tail is covered with short, smooth hairs that conform to the shape of the tail, it indicates that the sugar glider has been out of the pouch for less than three weeks, and is not ready to be weaned.

Do not pick one based on age. Age can be confusing if based on the approximate time the animal was born. When a sugar glider’s eyes have been open for a month, it is about 12-13 weeks old. However, it has only been out of the pouch for 4-5 weeks. If you ask a supplier for its age, make sure to clarify if they base age off the birth, or the emergence from the pouch.

Your sugar glider should have;

Bright, clear eyes that are free of cataracts, white spots, and discharge.
A reasonably fleshed appearance. The pelvic bones should not be overly apparent.
Fur that is soft, thick, and clean.
Properly formed stools. The stools should look like moist mouse droppings. If there is caked feces on the fur at the base of the tail, it is an indication that the animal has diarrhea.
An active and alert attitude. Observe the prospective sugar glider in its cage. It should move freely across the wires and the branches. An animal that sits in a corner or that has difficulty moving around is a sick animal.
A friendly and curious nature. Ask the seller to remove the sugar glider, and handle it for you. They will demonstrate the correct way to pick one up and handle it. The glider should be content to be handled. If the seller hands the glider to you, it will be hesitant as it does not know your scent, but it should be reasonably friendly and interested in checking you out.
