Polypedates leucomystax

Golden foam nest frogs used to be imported regularly from Southeast Asia. If they are healthy when first obtained, they are a hardy, long-lived, and easy to breed frog. Large females can have an even golden color that is very attractive.

Size:

Males 2 3/4 inches; large females up to 4 inches.

Longevity:

6 years or more.

Distribution:

Southeast Asia and introduced in several areas.

Care and Maintenance:

Similar to that of White's tree frog, but these frogs are not tolerant of low temperatures or low relative humidity. They are best kept in naturalistic tropical-forest vivaria with daytime temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s F. Minimum temperatures should be in the low 70s F. Once established, these frogs make good display animals.

Breeding:

Under the dry/wet cycle method, this species breeds readily in captivity. The female creates foam nests and lays about 175 eggs, which hatch in three to four days. Several clutches can be laid per year. This is a prolific tree frog. The tadpoles should be able to fall into an underlying container of water. They can be raised on tropical fish flake food and will metamorphose at between one and three months. The froglets are easily raised with standard tadpol-rearing methods.
