
The fossil record shows that the earliest ancestor of frogs and toads appeared about 230 million years ago, in the Triassic period of what is now Madagascar. 60 million years later the first true anura arrived. These were similar to certain Australasian species of today. The next group of frogs to evolve were during the Cretaceous period, 100 million years ago. A large number of modern groups came from this group. The most recent group dates to the Eocene, 50 million years ago
